According to research firm ABI, Blu-ray is too reliant on PS3 instead of the other way around. Blu-Ray may have trumped HD-DVD, but it may still struggle to replace the traditional DVD format.
The studios better hope that people are playing movies on their PlayStations. Otherwise there is very little installed base. In 2008 about 85 per cent of Blu-Ray players in the market will be found in PS3s; the dedicated consumer electronics and PC-based types of Blu-Ray players will not catch up in terms of market share until about 2013. -ABI principal analyst Steve Wilson
Furthermore, he states pricing difficulties as a reason:
If you’re only going to spend $500-600 on a PC, are you really going to spend 40% more for a built-in Blu-Ray player?
The PS3 is actually more than 50% less than 40% more than $600. Get it right! Either way, we will see how it pans out.
