Grand Theft Auto IV Preview

Hit the hooker for twenty bucks!

Now while we all know that the Grand Theft Auto series has lived up to its name over the years, there has always been one question in the back of everyone’s mind: Is GTA IV going to live up to the legend of its previous entries? Well, WhatIfGaming can tell you right now that it is definitely a title to get over-excited about. With a totally revamped engine and new mechanics, this is definitely a title that should be on everyone’s wish list.

“Wait there why is there a body here?”

The story itself follows a man, named Niko, who has immigrated from a foreign country to meet up with his cousin. Niko’s cousin has told him that he has a mansion, fancy sports cars, and women running all over the place (Lies! Lies I tell you!). As the very beginning of the story unfolds, we find Niko’s cousin taking him to an apartment in the middle of a ghetto sprawl. Obviously, something is not right here as you immediately begin your first mission.

As soon as you start the game off, you’re introduced to the basic principles of the game’s controls. Pressing forward on the analog stick causes Niko to walk and holding X for Playstation 3 and A for Xbox 360 makes him jog (Tapping this button now causes you to sprint, like a maniac hyped up on crack). There is a new shooting and cover system put into the mix of this game, in which everyone from FPS’ (First Person Shitters’) to action/adventure enthusiasts can enjoy. You now select a weapon with the D-pad, and your ready for some action. At this given moment in time your given the option of getting free targeting, an auto lock, or a combination of the two, by the way is retarded, because we all know which one everyone’s going to choose. Pressing the trigger half way will cause you to go into an aim mode similar to Gears of War and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and pressing down on the right analog stick causes a zoom-in like feature. Given you want an auto lock feature, you can simply achieve this by fully pressing down on the left trigger, and cycle through targets by flicking the right analog stick left or right. You can also move your reticle in auto-target mode allowing you to choose between the knees or the head.

A 360 camera rotation feature has been added by using the right analog stick while not aiming with your gun. Driving is now even more fun as police chases are now proximity based and no longer how many stars you have. As you’d expect there is now motion blur as you increase speed. Guns now have real time physics, as rockets and so on can now bounce off the ground and bullets can ricochet. This does not go without saying it still needs some work. The cover system is nice, but sometimes it can feel a little clunky. Add a few bug fixes and this game would be perfect.blow-off-some-steam.JPG
