Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time Review

Recrudesce our fearless Lombax and beloved robot XJ-0641, better known as Clank, for another journey on a prodigious hierarchy of pure delight and efficacy in what true courage really means. Ratchet and Clank are back in another adventure, this time to encounter one of the most terrifying and well known villain of the series: Doctor Nefarious, a robotic mad scientist that hates organic lifeforms. Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time is a very long awaited sequel to Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, which astounds a depiction of an action adventure story so implausible and realistic that it intertwines the definitions of time and space. Through incredible animation, remarkable voice acting, and moreover improved and highly appealing gameplay, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time is one of the best titles in the entire series to date.

Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time Review

The intergalactic duo is back in Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, continuing shortly after Clank is abducted at the Apogee Space Station by the mysterious alien species Zoni that are knowledgeable of his origins and the fate of time. Ratchet finally finds himself on an adventure he will never forget after his short escapade searching for booty. Through the most massive quests of their lives, both characters will fight to see each other once more as fate, time, and space hangs in the balance. Eventually an important question will be answered: Do Ratchet and Clank’s destinies depend on their relationship, or is it time for the universe’s biggest duo to part ways? With a heart melting storyline of monumental proportion, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time ushers in a new era for the duo with more faces to never forget, lines to remember for a long time, and moments to live through for the rest of time.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction brought an incredible level of nonlinear gameplay that is further magnified by Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. Players will still use their spaceship to largely travel around the galaxy in the interstellar space system, but will have more of a purpose than to just complete missions in planets A or B. Each planet has custom collectibles to unlock and plenty of space battles to engage in to test an incredible arsenal. Ratchet can land on planets in order to find more collectibles. These lands give Ratchet some lenience in the strictness of the main quest gameplay. Because they’re not related to A Crack in Time’s story, Insomniac could flex its creative muscles and make some unusually structured or entirely puzzle-based levels. The linear and badly executed rails shooter segments from Tools of Destruction are also completely gone and replaced with more entertaining free missions. Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time takes a level of space exploration and blends it in seamlessly to other assets of the game.

Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time Review

The arsenal of Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time is incredibly varied and the game further allows players a level of freedom not seen in the past iteration. Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time features weapons that make a repeat in some instances, but newer weapons are available. Repeats include the OmniWrench Millennium 12 and Buzz Blades to name just a few. The utilization of the Sonic Erupter is one of our personal favorites, which is a tiny alien species attached to a gun. Pulling the trigger allows the creature to sing out a mating call that harmonizes in blast sonic waves. A meter on the top of the screen pulses with the breath of the alien. Time the trigger pull accurately, and a more deadly wave can be released. Another interesting weapon comes with the Rift Inducer 5000, a powerful modification of the Rift Inducer from Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. Players can change the theme of their weapons through the utilization of Constructo mods that enable customization and provide a sense of reward to the players while modifying the weapons for more than just style but also pure power in terms of Constructo Weapons. Instances of Constructo mods include a nice variety with a majority of weapons. The Constructo Bomb allows the player to change types of explosions while a Constructo Pistol allows Ratchet to change the barrel, the stock of ammo, and the shots fired while. In a free scale space roaming system of this magnitude never seen in the Ratchet & Clank series, players need to be able to have an incredible arsenal for an unprecedented level of freedom that the gameplay is heavily geared towards.

Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time Review

Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time improves single-player by allowing both Ratchet and Clank to be played and each character’s decision having a major impact on the storyline. As Ratchet, players wield the Omniwrench once again which is used for his melee attacks and changing items in the environment to open gates, or turn gears.  Ratchet can further use his wrench as a type of laser to destroy enemies such as an Agorian. Beloved favorites such as gadgets are back, and weapons make a tremendous amount of hilarity known to players and enemies alike as they feel the pain of the “Spiral of Death”.   With Clank, the players use the time controlling abilities, but there is one large shift in how effective these time control powers are in a race against time with Dr. Nefarious and his time meddling ways. The main quests are diverse and different for the most part with exception to various side missions that can become repetitive. Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time takes main quests to a whole new level and provides for a longer gameplay than Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.

Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time Review

Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time takes a brilliant formula, modifies it, gives players what they have asked for and completely conveys a colossal and illustrious journey that players have been craving since. Even though there are repetitive problems with the side missions, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time allows players to experience a journey where they are living the moment by either constantly buying new weapons, unlocking upgrades for the ship via Zoni collection, discovering new abilities, solving puzzles, and meeting plenty of unforgettable characters with the Insomniac Games’ well known family-friendly humor. Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time has been a long wait, but a wait that was worth it. Every little thing about Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time takes witty comic humor and cartoon style to create an interactive Pixar animation to have fun playing no matter the age group. Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time is a game that gives a feeling of wanting more, needlessly making players demand more from something fantastic. Should a game do this, it has done its job right. Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time is a perfect example of this.
