ASUS ROG Strix G17
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX | GPU: NVidia GeForce RTX 4070 | RAM: 16GB DDR5, 4800MHz | Screen: 17.3”, 2560x1440, 240Hz | Storage: 1TB SSD | Battery life: 4h
- Excellent CPU and display
- Large and customizable RGB keyboard
- Good thermals
- Could be cheaper
- Poor battery life
The newest G17 is ASUS’s take on a high-end 4070 laptop. It’s great for gaming, but the outstanding screen and powerful CPU let the G17 double as a portable yet powerful video editing or Photoshop machine. It’s more expensive than our other picks, but that’s to be expected due to some superior hardware and, of course, the Strix tax.
Heavy and gamer-centric is how we’d describe this laptop. Its thin metal lid hinges on a plastic yet robust base holding a smattering of common ports on the sides and back. A bar adds an RGB glow to the bottom you can configure independently of the keyboard.
Speaking of, the G17 has a full-sized layout with five more programmable keys to boot. Key travel is decent whether you engage in typing or fragging sessions. The trackpad is above average but obviously can’t hold a candle to a true gaming mouse.
The screen is the G17’s best feature. It’s a 1440p IPS display with average brightness and so-so contrast you’d expect from such a panel. However, it boasts excellent color coverage and fast response times worthy of 240Hz. You might need to dial the details and resolution down to achieve such framerates in anything other than CS: GO, though.
The insides are easy to get to, which you’ll want to do eventually to beef up the RAM. The SSD is fast, and the G17 sports excellent online connectivity through Wi-Fi 6E. It’s quick to warm up but doesn’t get uncomfortably hot while gaming. The battery is meh even for a gaming laptop, clocking in at a 4-hour runtime.
Acer Nitro 16
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS | GPU: NVidia GeForce RTX 4070 | RAM: 16GB DDR5, 4800MHz | Screen: 16”, 2560x1600, 165Hz | Storage: 1TB SSD | Battery life: 8:30h
- Bright & responsive screen
- Outstanding battery life
- Comes with fast storage and USB4
- Loud in Turbo mode
On to the new Nitro 16, the best RTX 4070 gaming laptop you can get under $2,000. Its capabilities are similar to our winners, but a few downgrades justify the price difference. Nevertheless, this might be a better fit if you need a brighter screen and much better battery life.
Despite being all plastic and flexing a bit, the Nitro 16 is structurally sound. A few sharp accents reveal its gaming intent, but it’s not s flashy as our winner. It has an SD card reader and more USB ports. One of these is USB4 with charging capabilities and DisplayPort passthrough.
The keyboard has low travel. It’s responsive and has a full key complement. You can configure its RGB colors, create macros, etc., with the Predator Sense software bundled with the laptop.
This is another model with an excellent screen. It has a 16:10 ratio, so the resolution is slightly higher while reaching “only” 165 frames. It’s super bright at more than 500 nits, letting you work or game in brightly-lit surroundings. Color coverage isn’t as grand as on the G17, but 100% SRGB means you’ll get to play any game as intended.
The Nitro boasts excellent battery life for a gaming laptop. It will let you work or browse for close to nine hours before giving out. Thermals are tolerable, whichever preset you choose, but the Nitro can get loud if you pull all the stops out. You shouldn’t, as the Balanced preset gets you 90+% there while remaining noticeably quieter.
Gigabyte AORUS 15
CPU: Intel Core i7-13700H | GPU: NVidia GeForce RTX 4070 | RAM: 16GB DDR5, 5600MHz | Screen: 15.6”, 2560x1440, 165Hz | Storage: 1TB SSD | Battery life: 7:30h
- Great value for the money
- Good thermals and acoustics
- USB4 and Wi-Fi 6E
- Mushy keyboard
Our next pick climbs a rung lower, trading CPU power and screen excellence for a better price and good thermals. Gigabyte’s AORUS 15 might not be the best RTX 4070 laptop you can get, but the balance of features and price keeps it in the running.
There’s little to no give, even though the entire frame is plastic. An AORUS falcon and some tasteful accents relieve the matte-black boredom. This is another model with a brand-new USB4, which is also its only USB-C port.
The keyboard sports individually lit keys with medium travel. Hardcore gamers might find them on the mushy side, so keep your trusty axe nearby. It’s good enough for typing up reports or comments, though.
Gigabyte went with Intel’s 13700H. It’s a mid-range Raptor Lake chip that gives the 4070 laptop enough oomph to achieve triple digits in most games. It’s not as capable as AMD’s more expensive chips when it comes to multi-threaded performance, which you shouldn’t count against the CPU if you only game.
The screen is the smallest yet at 15.6” and unremarkable spec-wise. Even so, it has above-average contrast for an IPS display and excellent out-of-the-box calibration.
There’s little to complain about for the price. You get a fast PCIe 4.0 SSD, serviceable speakers, and a webcam that could be worse. A bit of tweaking lets the laptop operate close to peak efficiency while remaining reasonably quiet. The thermals aren’t bad either, further cementing the AORUS’s status as a well-rounded model.
MSI Katana 15
CPU: Intel Core i7-13620H | GPU: NVidia GeForce RTX 4070 | RAM: 16GB DDR5, 4800MHz | Screen: 15.6”, 1920x1080, 144Hz | Storage: 1TB SSD | Battery life: 3h
- Affordable for its powerful specs
- Excellent keyboard and speakers
- Fast storage
- Terrible battery life
- Dim and dull screen
Can you get an RTX 4070 laptop for less than $1,500? Yes, if you manage to catch the Katana 15 on sale. It delivers excellent 1080p gaming performance worthy of the card, and this CPU is powerful enough to handle productivity tasks with abandon. The screen keeps the laptop from being much higher on our list, but there are workarounds for that too.
While the name might suggest samurai and feudal Japan, the Katana actually adopts a sci-fi aesthetic. You’ll see it in the fake bolts, transparent arrow & WASD keys, as well as a cool faux-3D embossing near the power button. It’s the heaviest model on our list, which doesn’t matter since a measly 3-hour runtime means you’ll have to keep a power cable close by anyway.
The keyboard has satisfying travel and offers an excellent typing experience. Rather than each key, you can customize its four RGB zones. Standard ports flank it, including 8K-capable HDMI and several USB connections.
That brings us to the screen. There’s nothing wrong with the 1080p 144Hz display on paper, but switching it on and seeing the washed-out colors might make you reconsider.
It’s not a bright panel either, reaching only around 250 nits unsuitable for use in bright conditions. Put those ports to good use and hook the Katana up to a decent monitor. On the plus side, the speakers deliver an above-average aural experience.
Even with such drawbacks, the Katana is the best RTX 4070 laptop for budget buyers. Its screen doesn’t take away from the raw performance potential, fast storage, or snappy CPU that form the basis for an excellent gaming machine.
