Final Fantasy XVI has received a new trailer and an official release date at the Playstation State of Play this Thursday. The release date has a Summer 2023 window with no specific day set. The new trailer was bound to come out sooner or later since game producer Naoki Yoshida already confirmed it in May. The trailer showed various story cutscenes along with proper gameplay. It also showed large-scale battles between characters and even summons.
Final Fantasy XVI: What We Know
Final Fantasy XVI is the sixteenth mainline entry in the titular series. Set in the fantasy world of Valisthea, the game takes place in a medieval period. Central to the plot are the Eikons, the summoned monsters, and the Dominants, humans who control them. The game will release first on Playstation 5. It will also release for Windows after its timed exclusivity with Playstation ends. In addition to that, Naoki Yoshida, who is the producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV is leading the charge in this game as well. A trailer detailing the game’s world, characters, and lore was released to the public in December 2020. In July 2021, Yoshida stated that the storyline of Final Fantasy XVI along with voicework was in its finishing stages. He revealed later in May that the game was nearing completion.
Regarding the recent trailer Yoshida says ”In previous interviews and updates, we didn’t delve too deep into details about the game system, but hopefully with this preview, you all were able to get a better picture of what actual gameplay will entail—namely, high-octane battles featuring our protagonist Clive Rosfield wielding a full arsenal of attacks unique to the game’s many Eikons (summons). Not to mention epic clashes between the Eikons themselves that put you right in the action.”
He went on to say that the game is now in its final stages of development under Hiroshi Takai’s guidance. In addition, they are now focusing on preparing the game for release. The story’s characters and development team have also been detailed in some depth. More details about the game can be found here.
