A new Tomb Raider game is currently in development according to a recent announcement video on Twitter by Crystal Dynamics. The game will be developed on the recently released Unreal Engine 5. The franchise manager of the series at Crystal Dynamics, Dallas Dickinson, was present in the announcement video. Regarding the use of Unreal Engine 5, he said, “Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity, and to deliver the high-quality cinematic action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise.”
New Tomb Raider Game: What We Know
Apart from the use of Unreal Engine 5, there is not much solid information about the game out there. The last Tomb Raider game was Shadow Of The Tomb Raider released in 2018. Crystal Dynamics developed the games with help from Eidos Montreal while Square Enix published them. It was part of the reboot ‘Survivor trilogy’ starting with the rise of Lara Croft. Perhaps we will see the next game with a more mature Lara. Moreover, it will definitely be reminiscent of older Tomb Raider games if that’s the case.
The new game will be the first since the reboot to not use the Foundation Engine. Not only that, Crystal Dynamics built the Foundation Engine and Eidos Montreal developed it mainly during the 2nd and 3rd games. A lot of notable video game developers are using Unreal Engine 5 in developing their games. This includes developers like CD Projekt Red, Remedy, Obsidian, Dontnod, and more. That’s why it’s no surprise to see Crystal Dynamics in on the action too.
We’ll have to wait and see what Crystal Dynamics cook up with the new game and we can only hope the Lara Croft we see is as good as in the previous games.
