The Xbox and PlayStation consoles are typically seen as the highest-selling consoles in each generation. While that may be the case for older generations, the Nintendo Switch is currently outselling both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Recent reports highlight that the hybrid console is outselling both combined.

Nintendo Switch Beats Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5

At least, that’s the case for the first quarter of 2021, which comprises January to March 2021. Figures highlight that the Xbox console sold 1.31 million units. The PlayStation 5 sold 2.83 million, bringing the combined figure to 4.1 million. During the same time frame, however, the Nintendo Switch sold 5.86 million units.

The same reports have highlighted that the console’s sales are 12% compared to the same time last year. That puts the Switch at close to 85 million total units sold. This has naturally been feeding into the company’s success in the past few years. The console may also take home the title of Nintendo’s most popular.

Nintendo’s Ongoing Success

That doesn’t mean that the console is the company’s only success driver, however. Instead, it’s making quite a significant amount of sales from its games division. The same report announcing the Nintendo Switch‘s sales figures highlighted just how much the company has generated in overall sales.

In terms of games, specifically, the company made just over $3.1 billion from its digital sales division in Q1 2021. The Switch numbers could have been much higher, however. There were global shortages of several parts needed for the console, alongside thosed needed for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

That led to the latter two consoles suffering from shortages. As a result, many people are still waiting to buy either. It could be, though, that the continual waiting may have driven people to switch to the Switch rather than keep waiting.

When it comes to the console wars, it looks as though the Nintendo Switch is much more of a heavy-hitter than some people believed.
