PlayStation’s acquisition of Bungie Entertainment has been on the cards for a long time now. The rumors had been circulating all over the internet, and finally, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the acquisition today on Twitter:
Bungie Entertainment is a really big name in the game with great games like Destiny and the early Halo series under their belt. The acquisition could be a great deal as we can expect exclusive titles for PlayStation in the future.
Bungie Entertainment and Sony – A Growing Tale
When the acquisition was first announced, Sony Interactive Entertainment had this to say,
We’ve had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family.
This served as a prime towards us understanding that the deal was not, in fact, a hostile takeover as many had initially assumed. Instead, it is a healthy acquisition meant to signal a better future for both companies.
This is further highlighted by the fact that Bungie still has the right to work as a solo publisher and launch games independently under its name.
What’s Next For Bungie?
As aforementioned, Bungie is still able to take over independent titles. And, since the deal has been reportedly closed at $3.6 billion, we can expect a lot of capital to be injected into upcoming titles for Bungie.
Earlier the year, Xbox announced its acquisition of Bethesda and showcased a ton of new games for the platform. The battle of acquisitions seems to be the latest trend in the gaming industry as each major contender is looking to launch as much exclusives as possible.
Bungie has joined a list of already growing PlayStation Studios, including some major names like Naughty Dog, Firesprite, and Haven Studios.
The acquisition wars are really interesting as they’ll only provide fans the games they deserve with hopefully better quality.
