In the recent PlayStation State of Play, Nioh and Ninja Gaiden developer Team Ninja announced their action-RPG set in Japan titled Rise of The Ronin. The game is set during a notable period in Japanese history. A trailer, as well as stills from the game, were accompanied during its reveal at the State of Play.

Rise of The Ronin Details and Release Date

Rise of the Ronin is set during a momentous period of Japanese history. It is the concluding years of the 300-year Edo Period, often known as “Bakumatsu.” In the late 19th century, Japan is struggling with its repressive rulers and terrible diseases, while western influence seeps and civil war between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Anti-Shogunate groups continues to boil. During this time, players will take on the role of a Ronin character who has the ability to make free choices of his own. Katan-based combat is a key feature of this action RPG as well. The game had been in development seven years prior to its announcement.

Regarding this game, Fumihiko Yasuda, Director and President of Team Ninja says,

”With Rise of the Ronin, we set out to take the next big step. By harnessing all the skills and knowledge we’ve gained over the years we really wanted to take things to the next level by attempting to thoroughly portray the most critical revolution in the history of Japan including the darkest and ugliest chapters that many will shy away from. This is undoubtedly the most ambitious and challenging project for Team Ninja Studio to date. Yet we will allow our experience in creating samurai and ninja action games to guide us through this journey.”

Rise of the Ronin has no specific release date, but it is coming to the Playstation 5 and PC in 2024. More details can be found here.
