Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio

According to a report by Bloomberg, SEGA is developing reboots of its Dreamcast games Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. The report states that Sega wants to use these games and make them as successful as Epic Games’ Fortnite. In addition to that, Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio are two of the titles of its Super Game Initiative.

Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio Reboots

Crazy Taxi is a racing game that first appeared in the arcades in 1999 and had gained massive popularity initially. In it, the players, as taxi drivers, look for passengers and will have to take them to their destinations in the fastest time possible. The player can also use various stunt moves in order to earn extra money. Seeing its popularity, SEGA then releases the game on their Dreamcast console in 2000. Later, it got ported to other platforms like Playstation and Nintendo. It had spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs with the latest one being Crazy Taxi Tycoon for Android and iOS devices.

Jet Set Radio is a cel-shaded graffiti-based action game released in 2000 on the Dreamcast. It has players draw graffiti as part of a gang before other rival gangs within a time limit. It also had boss battles where you had to spray graffiti on the rival members too. The game received universal acclaim for its overall gameplay, graphics, and story. A sequel was released in 2002 followed by an HD remaster in 2012.

Rebooting these games will surely bring back a lot of players and newcomers will definitely find these games interesting. We will have to wait and see whether SEGA plans to release them or not.

SEGA’s Super Game Initiative

The reboots of Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio are all part of the Super Game Initiative by SEGA. This initiative was announced during the financial presentation of the company last year. The goal of this initiative was to deliver global hits that will deliver recurring revenue to the company. The company has set out a five-year plan for this initiative to come to fruition.

The Super Game titles will also incorporate NFTs and cloud technology too. This indication comes from the SEGA NFT trademark that was registered recently. Not only that, but the company had also announced in November that it has created a strategic alliance with Microsoft. They will use Microsoft’s Azure platform in order to develop these games. We don’t know how many projects are currently in the works. The Bloomberg report states that the Crazy Taxi reboot has been in the works for over a year. It also says that SEGA wants to release the game within two to three years. But it also says that the company might also cancel the development of these games as they are in the early stages.

Time will tell whether the Super Game Initiative by SEGA is successful or not. But with the amount of effort and investment the company is giving, it’s definitely worth at least a look.
