Sega announced Sonic Superstars at the Summer Game Fest. The title takes a very different approach to the last main entry i.e. Sonic Frontiers which was a 3D game. This again takes Sonic back to 2D with a more thorough focus on co-op gameplay.

Sonic Superstars Focuses Primarily on Co-Op Gameplay

The announcement of Sonic Superstars came as a surprise reveal at the SGF. A trailer was showcased that showed a very familiar yet different-looking Sonic game. While the title is 2D, it uses a new modern art design that seems very refreshing. You can watch the trailer below:

There are some notable locations and bonus stages in the trailer but again with a brand new style. The game seems very reminiscent of old Sonic games. Sega revealed that the franchise would be heading in a new direction after Sonic Frontiers. So, most expected future games to be 3D open-world, but Superstars seems like a rendition of the classics.

Moreover, as co-op is the main focus, you’ll be able to play 4-player co-op. The trailer shows Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy as playable characters. The end of the trailer sees Fang returning as well. There will be a total of three main villains; Dr. Eggman, Fang the Sniper, and a new villain. There will also be 7 Chaos Emeralds each giving the player a different ability.

Sonic Superstars has been slated for a Fall 2023 release. It will be priced at a massive $59.99 and will be available on PlayStation 4, 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
