To test it, Digital Foundry released a video showing the performance of the RPG really does seem to have improved.

The Witcher 3 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S- Finally At Peak State?

Digital Foundry goes into detail about the changes to the performance of the game on the current-gen consoles. With the PS5’s performance mode, the framerate is now consistently stable at 60 FPS. This was also seen with the launch build of the game. Fights and cutscenes can see a frame drop by 2 FPS once or twice but overall it is stable. During exploration in cities like Novigrad, there is a noticeable FPS drop. But Digital Foundry has said that it isn’t a big problem since NPC positions change with every run and there is always a case of CPU load. But, overall it can be expected to run at a range of 50-60 FPS.

The Xbox Series X’s performance mode also sees a bigger improvement with patch 4.02, especially with the framerate. Before the 4.02 patch, the console struggled to hit 60 FPS. But, after the patch, it hits it consistently. Exploration in Novigrad is also massively improved with it having a much higher chance to hit 60 FPS. Though, there are much more noticeable frame drops with it. Overall, the 4.02 update makes the game much more playable than ever before. Exploring in Novigrad is also a massive improvement in the Series S with an FPS increase of 8-10 seen at dynamic 1080p. Though, like the PS5 and Series X, FPS drops will happen.

Digital Foundry has concluded that the 4.02 build is more stable and polished especially with the performance mode. Though, there will be some stress points where the FPS will be in 50-60. In the 30 FPS Ray Tracing mode, the PS5 suffers a bit with its FPS going as low as 26 while the Series X remains nearly consistent at 30.

According to Digital Foundry, the 4.02 version of The Witcher 3 Next-Gen Update has massively improved the performance on the consoles with them hitting 60 FPS on performance mode consistently. Though Ray-Tracing mode still suffers on the PS5 a bit, overall the performance mode provides the ultimate experience.
