The Story

The main component of The Last Of Us is its beautiful story. The journey Joel and Ellie are going through is a difficult road they have to go on. The relationship and the trust between them shape how the characters transform during their adventure through America. Whether it is trying to survive a whole hoard of infected or trying to escape the guns of rebels, they protect each other.

Their search for the antidote to the cordyceps infection prompts them to meet interesting characters. There is at least one of them that will remain in your mind. The difficulties they encounter are harder to overcome if not with the help of trusted people like Tess, Bill, or the likes of them. Through their friendships, you discover bits of history in the lives of the protagonists.

Trying to find the Fireflies and to escape bandits are just some of the things you will do in the story. You will discover the morality of the characters, you will witness betrayals and difficult choices. But at the end of it, The Last Of Us still explores what loss means and how to deal with it. How to make friends in a post-apocalyptical world. And how to care for the ones you trust and love.

The Gameplay

There would be no story without the gameplay. Better said, there would be no immersion without the gameplay mechanics.

The mechanics of The Last Of Us are not extraordinarily complicated. You have guns, whether pistols, shotguns, or sniper rifles. Medkits for your health. You have crafting that can make improvised weapons, shivs, smoke bombs, and Molotov cocktails. You can pick skills that can improve your survivability. And, you have Listening mode, to better detect your enemies through hearing.

All of this would be plain and simple, but Naughty Dog took it a step further. Besides being able to sneak on enemies to immobilize them, they added small features to make the game more immersive.

Whether it is to displace a car to be able to go through a small hole or to get a collectible from another character, this press of a button makes you feel like you are the character. It makes you feel like you really did open that door. That you really started the encounter. These small interactions create an incredible environment where you really do seem to struggle. You really do seem to almost take your last breath. You really do seem to barely make it.

The work in the small details can really be seen even in the relaxed parts of the game. The witty comebacks of Ellie or the jokes she makes really do lighten up the mood. It takes you out, for just a second, from the intense action just two scenes ago.  All of this combines to make a great game and a great story.

The Multiplayer

The multiplayer of the game is one of the most underrated modes of the game. Needless to say that the main game takes precedence. But the multiplayer holds its own and very well draws from the main gameplay.

Three types of four versus four matches, it offers enough entertainment for any kind of player. You can either go Supply Raid, where the team that remains without tickets loses. You can choose Survivor mode, a tactical four versus four. Or you can go Interrogation, where you need to down your enemy and interrogate him. They all offer insurmountable amounts of fun.

You can also pick how to play. Choose stealth abilities to make you unseen in Listening Mode. You can favor a pistol build. Or you can choose to gather enough parts to buy special weapons. The choice is yours. Some of the abilities are locked to packages that you can buy with real money. But, there are pre-made builds that allow you to test the weapons and skills beforehand. And you can play them however much you want.

And on top of that, you can enjoy the teeth-clenching action just as in the main story. The maps are similar to locations in the game and have some of the same organizations.

The Last Of Us is a brilliant game that combines a lot of great work together to create a wonderful and compelling story. Adored by a lot of players, it offered a lot of emotions to everyone it played it. So why are you not playing it yet? If you’ve played it, what do you think of The Last Of Us?
