Dead Island 2 was one of the first titles shown for the PS4 and Xbox One back in 2014. While its 2011 predecessor on the PS3 and Xbox 360 met with mixed reviews by fans and critics, the sequel has since then had a turmoil of a development.
Dead Island 2 could be changing islands completely
Dead Island 2 is a name synonymous with development tragedy. Originally announced in 2014, at E3, the game has since then shifted developers 3 times and among those periods, the game has not had any updates regarding any new footage, details or anything.
The game is currently being developed by Dambuster studios.
The game was originally being developed by Yager Productions, from there, an unnamed developer took the reins, until 2016 when Sumo Digital took control from the latter studio.
In 2018, Deep Silver handed the game over to Dambuster studios who are currently developing the game.
According to Twitter user MauroNL (@MauroNL3), they observed that some career pages on Dambuster studios website are explicitly looking for people who can work on the current-generation consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series consoles).
Dead Island 2 is another example of a game caught in development hell, and it appears that these troubles cost them a hefty sum in lost developer costs when switching developers 3 times over, but it also cost them an entire console generation.
Perhaps with the new hardware brought forward by the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, Dead Island 2 can finally meet the intended vision that the game was meant to achieve.
For now, even if the game does release, fans are very sure we will have a redux of the entire Cyberpunk debacle, but this time fans might not be so forgiving to the developer.
Dead Island 2 and Dying Light 2 are two games that are marred in controversy and while the publishers continue to hold their silence, and have assured fans that the games are well under development, the lack of communication in these past years is not helping them.
What are your thoughts on Dead Island 2? Do you see it releasing for the current-generation exclusively, or is there a chance we will still see PS4/Xbox One versions without a repeat of CDPR’s nightmare?
