The Call of Duty series took a departure from Steam as of Black Ops 3 in 2015. Since then, the games have only been exclusively available through the battle.net store, where Blizzard/Acitivision titles are sold together. However, some curious artwork has made an appearance on steam that could suggest the return of the franchise to the digital store.
Call of Duty Coming Back To Steam?
According to Reddit user Kalinine they made the curious observation of how Modern Warfare II’s artwork has made a subtle appearance at the bottom of the Black Ops 3 page when users are prompted to check out the rest of the Call of Duty franchise.
The addition back to Steam could mean that Activision/Blizzard are looking to mitigate the weaker sales of the series from the previous years, by bringing the game to other store fronts, with Steam still being the most dominant store currently on the PC marketplace.
While Modern Warfare II recently got a release date, we still don’t know much else for the game until June 8th, which is when we are expected to see a reveal trailer which should help confirm or deny whether or not the franchise will see a return to Steam or not.
For now, take this news with copious amounts of salt as there is still very little to support this. While it is plausible for it to happen, and we have seen Ubisoft and EA also slowly depart from Steam, only for them to slowly return back to the platform too, it is possible for Activision to return once more as they really want to make sure the latest entry in the series is as successful as possible.
