We reported on the feature a few months ago, and while that was severely limited to a few people presumably, it seems that final rollout is finally happening, with the latest PS5 firmware including the ability to join voice chats on the PS5 similar to the Xbox Series consoles that got the feature last year.
A new way to chat – Voice Chats on PS5 from Discord
While the feature is now out for all PS5 owners, we can only hope that today marks the global launch for the feature. A growing number of people on Reddit and Twitter are already reporting getting the feature, so we can hope that Sony and Discord have worked out all of the bugs to facilitate the migration.
While the current PlayStation party chat system is okay in its current state, Discord offers the ability to chat with friends on cross-platform games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, Warzone/Warzone 2, etc. who can not join you on said PlayStation party chat.
Sony has outlined the steps to follow in an online guide that can be found here.
Unfortunately, where the voice chat feature worked for the Xbox Series and Xbox One family of consoles, there is a snag here, and PlayStation 4 players will not be able to join voice chats, which means that this is presently a current-gen-only feature for this line of consoles.
This is a rather bizarre choice, considering Sony and their partnership with Discord earlier in 2021, but alas, it another sign of the times that perhaps it’s now time for fans to consider upgrading from the PS4 to the PS5. Yesterday at CES, Sony announced that the PS5 shortage is now over, so unless your country is having serious issues with PS5 supplies, we recommend upgrading to one that would be better in the long run.
