Catching sea creatures in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a fun pass time, a good way to make bells, and essential activity for those that wish to complete their museum collection. To do so however you first need to learn the basics of diving. So, hold on to your wetsuit and join us in this guide on how to dive in Animal Crossing!
How to Dive in Animal Crossing?
You can dive underwater in Animal Crossing by tapping the Y button whilst swimming. This will cause your character to dive underwater for a few seconds before resurfacing for air.
Alternatively, you can also dive off of obstacles into the sea. Certain obstacles, such as cliffs situated next to the sea, or the rocks that spawn around your island, can be jumped off. To do so, make sure you are wearing a wetsuit, approach the edge of the obstacle, and tap the A button. If you are on a suitable object, your player will dive off into the sea.
Some of the objects that you can dive off of include:
- The pier where Kapp’n’s boat is docked.
- The airport deck.
- Shoreline rocks.
- Cliffs next to the sea, such as those at the rear edge of your island.
How to Catch Sea Creatures in Animal Crossing?
Now that you have learned how to dive in Animal Crossing, you can begin collecting sea creatures. Sea creatures are just another type of creature that is catchable in the game alongside bugs and fish. Sea creatures do not have their own individual area in the museum, however, and instead appear in terrariums inside the same section where fish appear.
You may have noticed tiny, oftentimes moving, shadows in the water. Don’t worry, they aren’t sharks that are going to eat you! These small shadows instead represent sea creatures.
To catch a creature, you just need to dive underwater and swim into the shadow. As mentioned above, you can dive underwater by tapping the Y button. When underwater, swim into a shadow and your player will catch it.
Some shadows move faster than others, so you will have to make use of tapping the A button to swim faster. When you hit the A button, your character will perform a breaststroke-like motion that will propel you forward. Timing strokes after each other properly will maximize your swimming speed.
Once you have caught a creature, you can either sell it at Nook’s Cranny for bells, or you can donate it to Blathers at the museum. Alternatively, you may also find scallops that can be traded with Pascal in return for mermaid DIY recipes. These DIY recipes require pearls, which is another item that can be found underwater.
