Destiny 2 Bound in Sorrow is the newest Destiny 2 seasonal quest. It’s a massive 51 steps long and will run pretty much up until the end of Season 17. It’s beyond easy to fall behind and get lost in massive, weeks-long quests like this, which is why I’m putting together this Bound in Sorrow walkthrough. This guide will be updated every single week, so no matter where you are in the quest, we’ll be able to help you the rest of the way.
Make sure you check back here every week on reset for the next steps in Bound in Sorrow, as well as more Destiny 2 news and guides.
Destiny 2 Bound in Sorrow Walkthrough
Bound in Sorrow Week 1
Step 1 – Gather Vestiges of Dread
Vestiges of Dread is the new seasonal currency for Season 17. It’s acquired by completing playlist activities, as well as activities related to the new seasonal content. For example, you get Vestiges of Dread for finishing Nightmare Containments on the Leviathan.
The very first step of Destiny 2 Bound in Sorrow is to collect 500 of these guys. You can do this a number of ways, but I recommend completing Nightmare Containments. You’ll get 500 within three or four runs, and the next phase of the quest carries on from this.
Step 2 – Create a Bound Presence
Once you have 500 Vestiges of Dread, Bound in Sorrow will ask you to create a Bound Presence. To do this, you need to complete all three tiers of a Nightmare Containment, then interact with the Nightmare Harvester to convert the Dread into a Bound Presence. This will likely be the gameplay loop every week going forward, so get used to this.
Step 3 – Complete Sever – Shame
Sever is our new weekly quest for Season 18 – meaning you’ll probably have to run this as a part of Bound in Sorrow every week. This week’s variation is called Sever – Shame, so we’ll probably have a handful of different variants rotating out on a weekly basis.
Sever – Shame isn’t too hard to complete. If you did Presage, it’s similar. Follow your objective markers, look for things to shoot, and you’ll make it out the other side of this mission.
Step 4 – Rendevous with Crow
After you finish Sever – Shame, you’re pretty much done with Bound in Sorrow for this week. Head back to the H.E.L.M. and speak with Crow regarding the rather harrowing experience he went through back on the Leviathan.
Step 5 – Speak with Eris at the Crown of Sorrows
When you’re finished with Crow, simply head to the Crown of Sorrows in the left wing of the H.E.L.M. Speak with Eris there and she’ll give you a rundown of what’s going on before asking you to wait, binding nightmares inside the Leviathan in the meantime.
Bound in Sorrow Week 2
Step 7 – Rendevous with Eris at the Crown of Sorrows
The 5-step process you went through for the first week of Bound in Sorrow is going to be the general routine you’ll be following for several weeks of content.
Return to Eris at the Crown of Sorrows and she’ll explain that rather than rejecting his nightmare, Crow should embrace it. She’ll then send you back to the Leviathan to once again complete a Containment and bind a presence.
Step 8 – Gather 500 Vestiges of Dread
Most of you will already have the 500 Vestiges of Dread you need for this part of the quest, but for anyone that doesn’t – just do some weeklies and other activities until you do. It’s incredibly easy to quickly max out your Vestiges.
Step 9 – Complete a Nightmare Containment and Create a Bound Presence
Return to the Castellum and complete a Containment Public Event. Select Containment rather than Castellum from the destinations map for the best results.
Once you’ve finished all three tiers, create a Bound Presence at the Nightmare Harvester to complete step seven of Bound in Sorrow
Step 10 – Complete Sever – Reconciliation
The Sever variation for week two is Reconciliation rather than Shame. The missions are exactly the same except for one key difference in the Containment Maze.
Last week, we were charged with restoring power to the area while being chased by an invincible Ceremonial Bather Nightmare. This week, however, we need to kill five Psions and collect the keys they drop.
When you head to the platform to trigger the encounter, you’ll be prompted to hack a terminal to unlock a barrier. Doing this will spawn the five Psions around the arena.
Almost all of the Psions are accompanied by a shielded Commander. To kill the Psions, you’ll need to first kill the corresponding commander to remove their shield. Simply knife the Commander from inside of its bubble before you unload on any one Psion.
At this point, it’s important to mention something. Don’t be like me and assume that the invincible Nightmare doesn’t spawn in Sever – Reconciliation, because it does -albeit late. Watch your back because it will sneak up on you.
When you’ve defeated all five Psions and collected the keys, proceed forward with the mission like you did last week.
Step 11 – Speak with Crow in the H.E.L.M.
Once you’ve completed Sever – Reconciliation, head back and speak with Crow in the H.E.L.M. He’ll give you some lore and character development, and from the looks of things will be taking a back-burned going forward in Bound in Sorrow, but will have more impact, in general, going forward.
Step 12 – Meet with Eris at the Crown of Sorrows
Return to Eris at the Crown for some more exposition, and you’re done with week 2 of Bound in Sorrows.
Bound in Sorrow Week 3
Step 14 – Speak with Eris at the Crown
Like every other week, week three of Bound in Sorrow starts by popping in for a cup of tea with Eris at the Crown of Sorrows in the H.E.L.M.
Like before, she’ll ask you to return to the Leviathan and capture nightmares to prepare for the severance ritual. Unlike before, though, Zavala is coming along for the ride instead of Crow.
Step 15 – Gather 500 Vestiges of Dread
If you’ve been playing any sort of Destiny 2 over the last two weeks, then you’ll probably already have 500 Vestiges of Dread sitting in your inventory. If you do, this quest step will automatically complete.
Otherwise, either head back to the Leviathan to gather Vestiges there or just go do your weeklies. Regardless, it shouldn’t take you too long to gather the required resources.
Step 16 – Create a Bound Presence by Completing Tier 3 of Nightmare Containment Aboard the Leviathan
You should be used to this routine by now. Simply head to the Castellum aboard the Leviathan. I would recommend loading into Containment from the Destinations map specifically – this just gives you the best chance at finding randoms to run Nightmare Containment with.
Once there, complete all three tiers of the Containment and use those 500 Vestiges of Dread to create a Bound Presence at the Nightmare Harvester after you defeat the tier three boss.
Step 17 – Complete Sever – Grief
The Sever quests are the chunkiest part of the Bound in Sorrow weekly quest. We know from the week three triumphs that there are six different versions of Sever, and given that we did two for Crow, we can assume there are two for Zavala, and then either two for Ikora or Eris.
Narrative-wise, it’s clear these will follow the same general format. The first Sever mission will be failed for one reason or another, with the second one having the character in question accept their nightmare.
Unlike Sever – Shame and Reconcillence, Grief is an entirely different mission. It takes place moreso in the Pleasure Garden area of the Leviathan rather than the Gauntlet. It also has a different boss.
Step 18 – Visit Zavala in the Tower
Zavala had a rough old time of it in Sever – Grief. Given that he’s one of our oldest friends, we need to go check up on him in the Tower.
Being the stoic that he is, he’ll still be reluctant to confide his feelings in him. This toxic masculinity is what is preventing him from healing from his past trauma, but he’ll speak to us when he’s ready.
In the meantime, you need to head back to the H.E.L.M to speak with Eris – in the flesh, mind, not at the Crown of Sorrows.
Step 19 – Speak with Eris in the H.E.L.M.
Load back into the H.E.L.M. and rather than heading straight to the Crown, you’ll want to walk forward. You should be able to see Eris standing there in front of you in all her weird, awkward glory.
Speak with her, and you’ll be given what for my money is the greatest cutscene Destiny 2 has ever had. The art is beautiful, the script (written by Senior Narrative Designer Dr. Hazel Monforton) is heartwrenching, and the fact that it’s the first bit of proper attention that Zavala has gotten in eight years makes the whole thing a lot more bittersweet. It’s exceptional, so please don’t skip it.
Once the cutscene plays out, dry your eyes and head to the Crown of Sorrows for one final chat with Eris. I don’t know why she couldn’t just speak with us while she was in the H.E.L.M. but whatever.
Step 20 – Chat with Eris at the Crown of Sorrows
Bound in Sorrows week three is over at this point. Eris will go through her usual dialogue and explain that she’ll try to help Zavala work through the nightmare, but in the meantime, she asks you to continue with Nightmare Containments on the Leviathan.
Bound in Sorrow Week 4
Step 22 – Speak with Eris in the H.E.L.M.
Welcome back for week 4 of Bound in Sorrow. Nothing has really changed between last week and now, so get ready for the same old routine.
First, like always, head to the H.E.L.M. and speak with Eris at the Crown of Sorrow. You’ll be sent to the Leviathan, again, to create a Bound Presence.
Step 23 – Gather 500 Vestiges of Dread
Before you head to complete a Nightmare Containment, you’ll have to have 500 Vestiges of Dread. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to create a Bound Presence.
Like weeks prior, chances are this quest step completes automatically for you. If you have 500+ Vestiges in your inventory, it’ll skip straight onto step 24.
Step 24 – Complete a Tier 3 Nightmare Containment and Create a Bound Presence
Again, load up Containment from the Moon in the destinations map. Complete all three tiers and create a Bound Presence at the Nightmare Harvester to complete Bound in Sorrow step 24.
Step 25 – Complete Sever – Forgiveness
This is what changes weekly during Bound in Sorrow. For week four, we’re going to be running Sever – Forgiveness.
Zavala has finally come to terms with his trauma and feelings. Like a real man, he’s ready to confide in us and the Nightmare of Safiyah.
Launch up Seever – Forgiveness from the Moon and run through the mission. Togetherness is on for this one, so if you have a buddy to play it with – great. Otherwise, you might struggle a fair bit.
Step 26 – Recieve a Transmission From Commander Zavala in the H.E.L.M.
After helping Zavala come to terms with himself, head to the H.E.L.M. and receive a transmission from the man himself.
If you’re a fan of the Destiny story and lore, I would advise paying good attention to this bit of dialogue. Personally, I think there are a few future story beats teased here, including humanity leaving the Last City (my post-Final Shape prediction), and possibly Zavala dying and/or abandoning the Traveller. That’s all speculation, though.
Step 27 – Speak with Eris at the Crown of Sorrows
Once you’re done with Zavala, you’re done with week four of Bound in Sorrow. Head down the stairs, through the decontamination chamber, and speak with Eris once again at the Crown for your weekly reward.
Bound in Sorrow Week 5
Step 29 – Meet with Eris at the H.E.L.M.
Things are going to be getting a little bit spicy this week, as you’ll notice the moment you load into the H.E.L.M. to meet Eris.
The Crown of Sorrow’s corruption has leaked out of its containment chamber and is spreading across the H.E.L.M. While it’s still livable and maintainable now, who’s to say it’ll stay that way?
In any case, take in the new bits of H.E.L.M. decoration and make your way down to the Crown. Interact with it and Eris will give you a status report.
She’ll tell you that Caiatl watched her boo Zavala defeat the Nightmare of Safiyah and thought “I could do that!” Of course, Caiatl wasn’t bound to the Nightmare Harvester like we were at the start of the season, so Eris doesn’t fancy her chances alone aboard the Leviathan.
You’ll deal with that later, though. For now, head back to the Leviathan to run a Containment and collect a Bound Presence needed for a Severance Ritual.
Step 30 – Collect 500 Vestiges of Dread
Nothing new here – you know the drill already. If you don’t have 500 Vestiges of Dread sitting in your inventory, complete some seasonal content until you do.
Step 31 – Complete a Tier 3 Nightmare Containment and Create a Bound Presence
Nothing new here, either. Just complete a Nightmare Containment like you have every other week and create a Bound Presence at the end of it.
Step 32 – Return to the H.E.L.M. to Recieve a Message
This is where things get interesting this week. Upon creating a Bound Presence, you’ll need to make your way over to the H.E.L.M. You’re looking for the same holographic projector that Zavala was chatting on last week. This time, though, Caiatl is the one sending you a message.
She’ll talk about her position as a Cabal and all that good stuff, before telling you that she’s going off to the Leviathan to defeat the Nightmare of Dominus Ghaul in ritual combat. Yeah, I’m not sure how that works either.
She’ll tell you not to interfere, but you’re obviously going to ignore that warning. Eris explains that this mission would be near-suicidal for Caiatl, so we’re off to save the day yet again.
Step 33 – Complete Sever – Rage
This week’s Sever mission is wildly different from the four we’ve already done. While I’d argue it’s the easiest of the bunch so far, it’s also definitely the most enjoyable.
You’re going to be fighting alongside Cabal as you make your way through the Leviathan’s engines in search of Caiatl. You’ll finally get to kill that horrible Containment Nightmare that has been murdering you these last few weeks – and you’ll finally get to fight a boss that doesn’t have damage gates!
So, get through Sever – Rage, either by yourself of by following our guide that’ll appear here shortly.
Step 34 – Speak with Eris on the Moon
Yes, you read that right. Rather than simply returning to the H.E.L.M. and calling it a week, we’re actually getting some bonus stuff to do!
Head over to Eris’ Sanctuary on the Moon and have a chat with her. While Caiatl is struggling to complete her Severance Ritual, Eris wants you to put your mind and body to other uses.
Calus seems to be using the Moon to attempt to reach out to the Pyramids in some way, shape, or form. The lunar surface has been turned into a battleground between Nightmares, Calus’ Loyalists, Xivu Arath’s Hive, and Savathun’s Lucent Brood. You need to figure out what Calus is planning.
To do that, Eris sends you off to the K1 Revelation Lost Sector.
Step 35 – Complete the K1 Revelation Lost Sector
If you’ve been playing Destiny 2’s endgame for any length of time, you’re likely familiar with this Lost Sector. Thankfully, you don’t have to complete it on Legendary or Master here. All you have to do is run through it normally and loot the chest at the end.
If you’re struggling to find the lost sector, you can add it as a waypoint to your map by clicking on the objective waypoint in your destinations map. Alternatively, you can land in Sorrow’s Harbor and follow your map manually to find the Lost Sector. It’s not hidden too well, so you shouldn’t struggle to find the entrance.
Run through K1 Revelation, destroy the crystals, kill the boss, and loot the chest. You’ll get some more dialogue from Eris before she sends you to investigate the Pyramid Ship beneath the moon. You know, the one Calus is trying to commune with that we found during Shadowkeep.
Step 36 – Travel to the Pyramid Beneath the Surface of the Moon
Traveling from K1 Revelation straight to the Pyramid is a bit of a trek, but you don’t really have any faster options.
If you’re a D2 veteran, then you probably already know the way to the Pyramid through the Scarlet Keep. If you don’t, though, you’ll absolutely need an objective marker. So, if you’re not tracking Bound in Sorrow by now, head into your quests menu and activate it – then just follow the marker through the keep, down into the Enduring Abyss, and up to the Pyramid.
Step 37 – Investigate the Area Near the Lunar Pyramid
Once you reach the Pyramid, you need to do some very simple investigative work. By investigative, I mean walk up to the three Cabal bodies you can see on the ground right in front of you.
After approaching the bodies, you’ll get some very interesting dialogue from Eris. She explains that these Cabal were sent here so that Calus could communicate directly with the Pyramid through the use of the Egregore Spores, with which the Cabal were infected.
Now, I don’t know about you, but that sounds like Calus is trying to create some sort of Cabal hive-mind to me – similar to how the Scorn operate. That’s just speculation, though.
Either way, wait out the dialogue and move on to Bound in Sorrow step 38.
Step 38 – Return to the H.E.L.M. and Debrief with Eris
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. So, like a kid being brought home from a field trip day in school, you need to head back to the H.E.L.M. to meet with Eris. We were literally just down the road from her on the moon, so I don’t know why we didn’t just speak with her there. You know how Destiny is, though.
You’ll get some final dialogue before being told to wait for next week when we’ll finally get the last Sever mission and hopefully finish out the Season of the Haunted’s questline.
Bound in Sorrow Week 6
Step 40 – Check-in With Eris in the H.E.L.M.
Welcome back to Bound in Sorrow week six! Compared to last week, things are nice and easy. No extra lunar adventures for us.
This is the week we’re finally getting to finish the last of the Sever missions. Like most past seasons, though, this doesn’t exactly mean that we’re done with the seasonal quest. There will likely be more story to get through in week seven, as well as the possibility of an end-of-season live event.
All of that can wait, though. For now, all you need to do is head to the Crown of Sorrow in the H.E.L.M. to speak with Eris.
She’ll tell you that Caiatl has been added to your Nightmare Harvester bond off-screen, so she’s now ready to go and sever the Nightmare of Ghaul.
As per usual, she’ll ask you to create a Bound Presence to assist with the ritual.
Step 41 – Gather 500 Vestiges of Dread
Nothing has changed here compared to every other single week of Bound in Sorrow. To progress the quest, you need to have 500 Vestiges of Dread in your inventory. If you don’t have enough, you’ll need to go farm some. If you do, then this quest step will automatically complete.
Step 42 – Complete a Nightmare Containment
Again, this step is the same as it has been every other week. You’ll need to head to the Leviathan and complete a Nightmare Containment. When you finish the boss at the end of tier three, don’t forget to create a Bound Presence at the Nightmare Harvester.
It’s worth noting here that you actually need to complete three tiers, as well as create a Bound Presence for this quest step to progress. If you load mid-way into a Containment run, you’ll likely have to start another one afterward.
Step 43 – Complete Sever – Resolve
Once you’ve got your Bound Presence ready to go, you’re off to complete the last Sever mission. Sever – Resolve sees us assist Caiatl in severing the Nightmare of Dominus Ghaul.
Compared to Sever – Rage, this mission plays out almost identically. There is no major or noticeable difference – with the exception of Caiatl traveling through the Leviathan with us and being a total badass.
You could easily complete this mission in five minutes – possibly even faster if you use our Sever – Resolve guide.
Step 44 – Recieve the Hologram at the H.E.L.M.
Once you’ve completed Sever – Rage, head back to the H.E.L.M. to finish off this week’s Bound in Sorrow quest steps.
Head to the hologram projector in the Cabal wing of the H.E.L.M. to recieve a massage from Caiatl. She’ll give you some heartwarming stuff about her vision for the future of the Cabal Empire, and express how she’s finally accepted the Guardians as full allies to fight alongside with. It’s all really good stuff.
Step 45 – Speak with Eris at the Crown
Once you’re finished having your little chat with Caiatl, head down the stairs in the H.E.L.M. to the Crown of Sorrow.
Eris will explain that despite severing all the connections between the Lunar Pyramid and the Leviathan, nothing’s happening. She’s concerned that something big is coming – something that we’re not at all prepared for.
Who knows just what that is, though. We’ve completed all of the Sever missions, so from here on out, we’re in the dark. There’s at least one week of Bound in Sorrow left, so maybe we’ll get some answers then. For now, though, sit tight and wait.
Bound in Sorrow Week 7
Step 47 – Speak with Eris at the Crown of Sorrow
Well done, you’ve finally made it to the last week of Bound in Sorrow. It’s been a long road, but you’re almost at the finish line.
To get things rolling, you’ll need to head back to the Crown of Sorrow to speak with Eris. She’ll explain that Caiatl’s impatience gave Calus the time he needed to complete his ritual, albeit haphazardly. She explains that not all is lost, though, if we launch a collective assault on the Lunar Pyramid before Calus can consolidate his power.
Step 48 – Collect 500 Vestiges of Dread
Before that, though, we need to go through the usual busybody work. That starts with obtaining 500 Vestiges of Dread. Thankfully, this is the last time we’ll have to go through this tedious loop.
Step 49 – Complete One Final Nightmare Containment
After obtaining enough Vestiges of Dread, you’ll set off to the Leviathan to complete one last Nightmare Containment and to create a final Bound Presence. I don’t know about you, but I for one am delighted we won’t have to go through this again. As great as this season has been story-wise, the gameplay loop has been a slog, to say the least.
Step 50 – Complete Catharsis
We don’t have a Sever mission this week. Instead, we’ve got a season-finale mission in the form of Catharsis. This mission sees us, Crow, Caiatl, Eris, and Zavala launching a last-ditch assault on the Leviathan in an attempt to stop Calus from finalizing his transcendent transformation.
While short, this mission is actually really cool. It might feel anticlimactic, but it’s important to remember that we’re probably getting an end-of-season cinematic or event that’ll be more conclusive regarding where we’re going with Calus. For now, though, Catharsis serves as a perfect cap on the character arcs of everyone involved in Bound in Sorrow.
Step 51 – Speak with Eris at the Crown of Sorrow
Finally, all we have to do now is have one last chat with Eris back at the Crown of Sorrow in the H.E.L.M. She’ll be as pessimistic and mysterious as usual, but we shouldn’t expect anything less as we launch ourselves into Destiny 2’s final act.
After collecting your upgrade module, you’re all done! Hopefully, this guide helped you crack through Bound in Sorrow easily enough. It’s not a difficult quest by any means, but it is repetitive. Once you’re done, you’re done, though. So, enjoy the break between now and Season 18.
