Minecraft 1.20 is out and fans are excited to get on an adventure. While 1.20 brings loads of new blocks and resources, there’s no denying that diamonds remain to be one of the most important items in the game.

Similar to older Minecraft versions, you’ll need to dig deep to get your hands on some diamonds.

Being a key ingredient for improved weapons and gear, we understand that you need to collect as many diamonds as you can in Minecraft.

Today, we’re going to show you the best level to find diamonds in Minecraft 1.20.

Best Levels to Find Diamonds in Minecraft

Minecraft Layers

Diamonds are a rare resource in Minecraft that generates below layers 16 to -64. This means that going further down layer 16 will increase your chances of finding diamond blocks.

For previous versions, Minecraft generates diamonds equally across layers. In 1.20, diamonds become increasingly common as you go down. Based on Minecraft’s ore distribution, the best level to find diamonds in 1.20 is at layer -59.

Additional Tip

While Minecraft’s ore distribution suggests mining diamonds at layer -59, we recommend mining around layer -52 or -53. This should put you 1-2 levels above layer -54 where underground lava lakes form.

Mining at these levels should keep you safe. While you can still run into lava chambers at layer -52 or -53, chances are reduced compared to mining at layer -54 or lower.

You don’t want to jump into your death and drop all the diamonds you’ve collected, right?

Diamonds can be mined using an iron, diamond, or netherite pickaxe. Each diamond block drops one diamond but can be increased using Fortune enchantment. Fortune gives 1/3 chance for 2 diamonds and this increases depending on the enchantment level.

You can also enchant your pickaxe with Silk Touch if you want to get diamond ore blocks in Minecraft.

Diamond Strip/Branch Mining

If you want to find diamonds fast in Minecraft 1.20, we suggest doing strip or branch mining. This simply means going straight down to the best level to find diamonds in 1.20 and start creating tunnels.

Diamond Mine

Diamond ore veins have higher chances of generating if they are surrounded by solid blocks and not exposed to air.

Things to Bring When Mining

Before going out to mine diamonds, make sure that you are prepared.

It is crucial to bring loads of torches with you to keep your tunnels adequately lit. Having a well lit mine can help you navigate it faster without getting lost. It should also come in handy when you have to run away from hostile mobs.

Lava Pool Deep in Overworld

As you inch closer to bedrock, the chances of you encountering laver pools increase. Bringing a water bucket, allows you to turn lava into obsidian, which is used for the nether portal’s frame. This can also come in handy if you catch yourself on fire to extinguish lava.

Bringing a decent amount of food is also a must since breaking blocks can increase hunger levels. Healing potions are also great when you take some damage from hostile mobs.

Adding chests to your mines is also a great option. This way, you can store unnecessary blocks and only bring diamonds and valuable resources with you to the surface.

Why Are Diamonds Important in Minecraft 1.20?

Since Minecraft was released, diamonds have always been an important resource for players. Before netherite was introduced, the diamond was used for creating the strongest tools, weapons, and armor.

Minecraft 1.20 also introduced new features that extend the use of diamonds. For instance, diamonds are needed for duplicating Smithing Templates, an item used to apply trims to your armor.

Armor trims are purely cosmetic changes that are styled based on the structure/biome where you found the template.

Diamonds are also needed for these items:

  • Enchanting Table
  • Firework Star
  • Jukebox

Diamonds continue to hold immense value in Minecraft 1.20. We hope that this article helped you find enough diamonds for your Minecraft projects.

These gemstones remain a key ingredient for crafting superior tools, protective armor, and weapons. However, their importance doesn’t end there. With the new version adding more ways to use diamonds, who knows what we might get with future updates.
