How to Get an Axe in Animal Crossing?

To get an axe in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you need to progress through Tom Nook’s opening tasks and bring him a number of fish and bugs. Once you have done so, he will give you the DIY Recipe to create a flimsy axe.

The flimsy axe DIY recipe costs five tree branches and two stones. Tree branches can be found on the floor next to trees, or by shaking them. Stones on the other hand can be found around rocks.

The flimsy axe is the worst type of axe in the game and breaks rather quickly. Fortunately, there are better axes out there – sharper ones too!

What Types of Axes Are There in Animal Crossing?

The types of craftable axes in the game are:

  • Stone Axe – made using a flimsy axe and three pieces of regular wood.
  • Iron Axe – made using a flimsy axethree pieces of regular wood, and an iron nugget (simply called the axe in-game).
  • Golden Axe – made using a flimsy axethree pieces of regular wood, and a golden nugget.

The DIY Recipe for each axe can be learned after purchasing ‘Pretty Good Tools DIY Recipe’ from the Nook Stop Terminal. It costs 3,000 Nook Miles to purchase. The exception is the golden axe, which requires breaking 100 regular axes first before you learn the DIY recipe.

So, what are the differences between axe types then?

Like in other games that have tool tiers, such as Minecraft, higher-tiered axes last longer in Animal Crossing. The below table shows how many times you can use one of the axes before it breaks.

Type of AxeDurability (hits)
Flimsy Axe40
Stone Axe100
Iron Axe100
Golden Axe200

In Animal Crossing, a Golden Axe is a bit like a Diamond Axe. It is the crème de la crème of axes, but it isn’t one that fresh islanders run around with.

Also, one more important thing to note. THE axe, as well as the golden form – the golden axe –, will chop down trees completely. Flimsy axes and stone axes will simply extract wood after three consecutive hits, after which the tree will not drop any more wood. However, if you use one of the better axes, three hits will break the tree instead.

There are situations when this can be useful, as digging up a tree stump does not pick up a tree. Therefore, if you want to clear trees and not reuse them, they can be used to do so.

You can also use the tree stumps from chopped trees as decorative pieces. Tree stumps can be sat on as if they were chairs, which gives off a really nice country look and feel!
