Once you’ve created your character in Remnant 2 and started the game, it will take you about a minute or two before you start seeing action. The starting area is designed to ease you into this soulslike looter shooter. At the very end of this area, you’ll face The Root Mantis in Remnant 2.
Let’s take a quick look at the introductory boss of Remnant 2 and how to best deal with it. We’ll talk about its moveset and some counters you can perform to stay on your feet by the end of this bout.
Where to Find the Root Mantis in Remnant 2?
The Root Mantis is found in the introductory area of the game, where you and Cass are looking for Ward 13, a safe space and the last bastion of humanity.
You’ll be introduced to the controls and different mechanics of Remnant 2 and then fight off a few weak enemies. Then, you’ll be introduced to Clementine and Bo after a cutscene, who will accompany you around the sewer area.
You’ll come across The Root Mantis at the very end of the root-infested sewers.
Defeating the Root Mantis
The fight takes place in a long and narrow area. You don’t have to worry too much as you are not alone. Your companions will dish out damage and take the aggro off you, giving you enough time to reposition and deal damage.
Since this is an introductory boss, the game goes easy on your and teaches you about dodging, positioning, and regrouping with teammates.
The Root Mantis uses the following attacks against you:
- Slashes (Both Vertical & Horizontal) – Can be easily dodged by moving to either side.
- Charged Attack (Uses it to move to the other corner of the arena) – Very dangerous if you are caught in the charge.
- Strafes (Dodges) – The Root Mantis can evade your bullets if you keep shooting from a distance.
- Ranged Projectile (Sort of like a laser) – This attack causes damage and staggers you as well.
Just keep your distance from the boss, let your team gather its attention, and then deal damage to its head & eye area. Once it notices you and charges, wait for it to get slightly closer and then dodge to either side.
Dodging too early will result in the boss adjusting its trajectory and hitting you regardless of your dodge. Keep rolling and getting away from it. Then deal as much damage as you can. Repeat until the baddie goes down.
Rewards
You’ll get the following items as a reward for defeating the Root Mantis in Remnant 2:
- Tome of Knowledge (Trait Point)
- Root Ganglia (Material for crafting different weapon mods)
This takes care of your first boss in Remnant 2. Things will only get tougher from here on out, so make sure you keep your heart upgraded at all times.
It wouldn’t hurt to grab some decent early-game gear before heading out to conquer other worlds. So, grab the MP 60-R SMG from Ward 13 while you are there. It’s a great secondary weapon that can become even more deadly as you upgrade it.
