Square Enix has recently taken it upon itself to go on a mass DMCA spree. While this is standard practice for a company to do, we saw this behavior earlier this year with Rockstar and Take-Two. Perhaps the company is gearing up for a major announcement?
A lot of favorite Square Enix titles could be getting a remaster
Earlier this year, Rockstar and Take-Two went on a spree of issuing cease and desist letters to a lot of modders and individuals who made Rockstar’s original versions of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas into much better forms. Even taking one of the groups to court. Later in the year, Rockstar would go on to release the now infamous GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition.
We are now seeing a repeat of this behavior with Square Enix. They have issued a cease and desist to FantasyAnime. A name famous for their work on retro games and their ROM’s.
In their tweet, Fantasy confirms that Square has asked them to stop working on Chrono Trigger, Parasite Eve, and Front Mission.
While we covered Chrono Trigger previously, and nothing has come of it (yet) the addition of Parasite Eve and Front Mission to the list is rather peculiar.
If Square Enix is truly following in Rockstar’s Footsteps, a potential remaster of all three games, or even individual games could be in the cards.
With The Game Awards done and dusted for 2021, the company will probably wait until E3 2022 to make a new announcement, but we will have to wait and see if leakers in the future reveal any details regarding the potential for a remaster if any.
All of the games have gone decades without a new entry, so it would be a huge surprise if Square Enix did anything beyond a remaster as a sequel or remake to any is very unlikely.
