Tartaglia (Childe): Genshin Impact Build Guide

Hey, comrade! In today’s guide, we will discuss Childe, and how to build him: including his Ascension/Talent Materials and costs, his talents, constellations, best artifacts, weapons, and teams. Although, if you’re new to the game, we will take the liberty of beginning with a brief introduction.

Tartaglia, more commonly referred to as Childe, was first released in the 1.1 update, is the 11th Fatui Harbinger of Snezhnaya. He is a 5-star Hydro bow user and also one of the community’s (and my) favorites. Although his weapon type is not frequently used, his E skill makes him one of the most fun characters to play. Childe applies Hydro blindingly fast, making him useful for proccing Hydro reactions such as Vaporise, Electro-Charged, and Freeze.

An Overview

Childe’s kit makes him incredibly unique. Fast ATK speed, high DMG output, capability for ranged attacks, what more could you want from a character? Well, besides healing but that’s what the team’s section of the article is for. Of course, some players may not feel comfortable playing with the character. That is fine since we all have our different playstyles.

Childe’s Ascension and Talent Costs/ Mats

Leveling up Childe when building him makes the unit become much stronger, because, with every Ascension Level, Childe gains a Hydro DMG boost.

Childe’s Talents

Childe‘s talents are, to be honest, incredibly characteristic. His passive and combat talents exist not to aid in exploration, which even someone as powerful as Xiao can do. Neither does he give extra crafting materials like Eula, nor extra farming materials, such as wood, as Itto does. No matter how you look at it, the reason you’re building Childe is that you want DMG. And boy does he provide.

Childe’s Passive Talents

Never Ending

Extends Riptide‘s duration by 8s.

Not the most game-changing upgrade but allows for more breathing time in fights.

Sword of Torrents

When Tartaglia is in Foul Legacy: Raging Tide’s Melee Stance, on dealing a CRIT hit, Normal and Charged Attacks apply the Riptide status effect to opponents.

This passive talent is incredibly useful, it allows Tartaglia to make use of his Riptide mechanic without having to rely on his bow attacks.

Master of Weaponry

Increases your own party members’ Normal Attack level by 1.

This is a useful talent to have if you want to maximize normal attack DMG coming from characters like Eula, Kamisato Ayato, or Rosaria.

Childe performs a 6 attack sequence, Dealing physical damage. His aimed/charged attack does Hydro DMG and applies the Riptide status on the enemy. This status can be made use of in different ways.

Our suggestions, and thoughts:

We will discuss how Riptide works in this section. Opponents affected by Riptide can suffer consecutive bouts of AoE Hydro DMG when they are hit by a fully charged aimed shot. Upon defeat, these enemies create a small Hydro explosion that applies the Riptide status on any nearby opponents.

Generally, you aren’t going to use Childe’s normal attacks at all (unless of course you wanna meme and/or are bored), since most of his DMG comes from his Skill and Burst. So this talent can be effectively ignored when building Childe. You will learn more about Riptide in his Skill, burst, passive talent,,s and his constellation sections.

Childe’s Elemental Skill

Foul Legacy: Raging Tide

Swtich Stance, Normal and Charged Attacks

Using this skill deals Hydro DMG to opponents in your immediate surroundings. Furthermore, Childe changes his stance, equipping bladed weaponry, replacing his bows normal attacks for much stronger melee attacks. The attack sequence consists of 6 strikes that can be dealt in any order within a 30s uptime. After which the ability goes into a painful cooldown of 45s.

Our suggestions, and thoughts:

This talent should be your priority, as you will be using it more often than other abilities. It will also be your primary source of DMG. The community uses the N and C notations to denote Normal and Charged attacks, respectively. You may find it effective to use N2C or N3C when facing enemies. This translates to 2/3 normal attacks into a charged attack. I prefer using N3C because I find the 3rd normal into a charged attack transition satisfying to use.

After using this ability, you can change back into the ranged stance but note, that doing this will put your Melee stance into a considerable cooldown. However, this cooldown is dynamic, i.e. the cooldown depends on how long you stay in Raging Tide’s Melee Stance. A base cooldown of 6s applies initially, which increases up to a maximum of 45 seconds. The community prefers using this ability for 10 to 15 seconds, the reason for this is explained in the artifacts section.

Childe’s Elemental Burst

The Burst attack changes depending on the stance Childe has assumed upon cast.

Ranged Stance: Flash of Havoc

Fires of a single Hydro imbued arrow, applying Riptide on enemies and refunding 20 of its 60 energy cost.

Melee Stance: Light Obliteration

Performs a slash attack, dealing Hydro DMG and triggering Riptide Blast if opponent has Riptide status. Riptide Blast is an AoE Hydro explosion that occurs only when Childe uses his burst in Melee stance.

Our suggestions, and thoughts:

Childe’s burst is one of the highest scaling abilities in the game, this means, with every talent level the percentage multiplier increase massively. Thus, this ability should be the first thing you upgrade after your skill.

Childe’s Constellations

A brief note is necessary here.. C0 Childe is an amazing unit. Please do not feel forced to roll for a character’s constellations. They are nice to have and can boost the effectiveness of a character but aren’t worth spending real-world currency on unless you have a large reserve of expendable income. 

For a character like Childe, his constellations aren’t exactly stellar (pun not intended). The right C0 Childe build easily fulfills the DMG needs of any player.

However, if you do end up getting more constellations, congratulations! Let us get you familiar with Childe’s Stella Fortuna.

Constellation Lv.1

Foul Legacy: Tide Withholder

This is a nice quality of life change, if you’re having trouble making sense of Childe’s cooldowns, then this constellation should serve you wonderfully. You can also make use of Anemo Resonance that provides a further 5% reduction in CD.

Constellation Lv.2

Foul Legacy: Understream

This constellation, when cleverly used, is very powerful. Essentially letting you use your burst twice. First use your burst when in Ranged Stance, which inflicts the opponent with Riptide. Then after switching to Melee and building up your burst again (which should be easy considering Ranged burst returns a third of the cost and keeping in mind this constellation). You can use your burst on cooldown.

Another thing to note is that this constellation only works when you defeat an enemy, so it’s useless against powerful bosses.

Of course, if you’re running an effective rotation, then you shouldn’t need this constellation at all. More about this in the team’s section.

Constellation Lv.3 + Lv.5

These two constellations buff the talent level of every character in the Genshin world. So no major discussions are to be had here.

Constellation Lv.4

The constellation passively procs Riptide, in other words, Childe no longer needs to attack an enemy with his burst or skill to gain that extra Riptide Blast or Riptide Slash DMG. It will do so automatically, even bringing in Riptide Flash into the mix (from his Normal attacks section). The constellation might hinder the ease of setting up elemental reactions, so it is advised to be careful when activating it.

This constellation enables Childe to be played in a completely different style than his usual Main DPS spot. Enabling characters like Ganyu or Ayaka to Freeze and do more DMG.

Constellation Lv.6

Havoc: Annihilation

This constellation is beastly, remember those painfully long cooldowns? C6 childe is free from such weaknesses. Allowing you to constantly use his Melee Stance. However, this is an entirely different playstyle for Childe ,who usually works for a Taser or Quickswap team. So consideration is recommended before pulling c6.

Important:

Note, that the cooldown only goes away once you switch back into Ranged Stance. You can do this by pressing E again or switching to another character. After you’ve done that, you are free to go into your Melee Stance again.

Childe’s Best Artifact Sets

This section will discuss two of Childe’s viable artifact sets, Shimenawa’s Reminiscence and The Heart of Depth.

Shimenawa’s Reminiscence

Characters ATK is increased by 18%. When casting the character’s skill, they lose 15 energy (if available) and their normal attacks deal 50% more DMG for 10 seconds (if energy was deducted).

The Heart of Depth

The character gains a 15% Hydro DMG bonus. After casting skill, the character gains a 30% normal and charged attack DMG boost for 15s.

Discussion:

Both of these sets are good and work for Childe. Choosing which one to pick depends on what you already have, and also considering domain difficulty and other artifacts that you might get for completing the domain.

The Peak of Vindagnyr in Dragonspine (The heart of Depth) is a bit more difficult than Momiji Dyed Court in Yashiori Island (Shimenawa’s Reminiscence). Unless you’re also considering farming the Blizzard Strayer set for another character, it’ll be faster and more worth farming the Emblem of Severed Fate set since it’ll be better for characters like Beidou who you’ll be seeing in the teams’ section.

When building Childe with either of these sets, it is important to take into consideration factors such as playstyle and teams. For taser teams that can easily feed energy into Childe, Shimenawa’s might turn out to be better. For players that prefer other methods of play and don’t want to deal with the energy lost, Heart of Depth will be their go-to set.

Childe’s Best Stats on Artifact Sets

Childe’s artifacts stats are pretty straightforward. You are going to need as much CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG as possible, a 1 to 2 ratio is preferred between these two variables. ATK % is also good.

A CRIT Rate/DMG circlet is going to be your go-to peice for a DPS Childe build (or any build really).

Hydro DMG bonus on your goblet is good. Do I need to explain how Childe does blue-colored splashy water DMG? no? good.

An ATK sands is preferred over all others.

Childe’s Best Weapons

5-star weapons

Childe can be seen equipping this weapon in his weekly boss fight so no wonder this is his Best in slot, the monstrous CRIT Rate and ATK boost coupled with Daylight’s Augury‘s ATK will progressively do more damage when you are using abilities and attacking when on-field.

This bow is also one of Childe’s best weapons. It goes particularly well with Shimenawa’s set due to its 3rd Thunder Emblem stack condition: Energy must be less than 100%.

Skyward Harp

Before the release of the two preceding bows, the Skyward Harp was the Best in slot weapon for Childe, its base ATK dwarfs the later weapon releases and it provides a nice boost in both CRIT Rate and DMG. The extra bit of physical DMG is nice too, can’t complain!

4-star weapons

The Viridescent Hunt

The Viridescent Hunt is the best 4-star weapon for Childe. It may not have a high base ATK like the 5-star bows, but it makes up for it because of its CRIT Rate and Verdant Wind passive ability. See, Childe does more DMG the more opponents he’s facing, but the problem lies in not being able to group them. This bow deals with that issue splendidly and even does some extra DMG on top of that.

This is also a very good 4-star option for Childe. The passive talent, especially at higher refinements allows Childe to perform high DMG normal attacks. Although Charged attacks take a slight hit, they aren’t completely thrown to the ground, so you can still feasibly perform them. Although, a better attack sequence would now be N5C, which translates to 5 normal attacks into a charged attack.

A detailed weapon ranking is shown below, do note, however, that these tests were conducted under standardized, optimum conditions and shouldn’t force a player to roll on the weapon banner.

Childe’s Best Teams

Childe’s teams are either based around him playing the Main DPS role or a Hydro enabler.

Childe National

Childe,, Xiangling, Kazuha, Bennett

This is one of the best teams in the game. He plays the role of enabler here, after using Bennets burst, switch to Kazuha/Sucrose, and use their skills to provide Xiangling with a Pyro DMG boost. Then, use Xianglings Skill and Burst before switching to Childe and going ham with his normal attacks. This makes sure enemies are always inflicted with Hydro, allowing Xianglings burst to do ALOT of DMG alongside Childe.

Kazuha can be used interchangeably with Sucrose here, it may be worth considering their pros and cons.

Sucrose provides some grouping to aid Childe in battle, however, this only occurs when she uses her burst, Kazuha on the other hand can group enemies every 6/8 seconds.

Sucrose provides a larger Elemental Mastery Boost as compared to Kazuha. She can also run the Thrilling tales of Dragon Slayers weapon, which allows Xiangling or Childe to gain a 48% ATK boost.

If you’re running the Viridescent Hunt weapon, then Sucrose might be the better choice, since this weapon already handles crowd control but has low base ATK, which Sucrose can provide with Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers.

Childe Electrocharged Team

This is also one of Childe’s most powerful teams. Childe’s fast ATK SPD paired with Beidou’s burst and Fischl’s Oz (E skill) constantly procs Electrocharged reaction, stunning enemies, and doing an insane amount of Hydro and Electro DMG. Bennett acts as a healer and ATK buffer for your characters. Although not very synergized, Ei can replace Fischl here. Keep in mind though that Ei’s burst will not proc Beidou’s burst, so you’ll have to play around with the rotations a bit and see which one works for you.

Pure Hydro DPS

This is a team I use on my account. Barbara is making use of her c2, which buffs Hydro DMG of your characters that are making use of her skill, she also has Thrilling tales of Dragon Slayers equipped, increasing Childe’s ATK by 48%. Xingqiu is also making use of c2, decreasing opponents’ Hydro res. Kazuha gives more Elemental DMG boost by swirling Xingqiu‘s Hydro.Oh, and Childe has the Skyward Harp equipped alongside the Shimenawa’s set. Pretty sweet no?

A personal favourite

Childe, Ei, Kazuha, Bennett

This is the team I use on my account, it’s pretty straightforward. Use Ei’s skill first, then Kazuha to group enemies. Bennett burst and skill for the heck of it and then delete everything with Childe. Easy.
